A NORTH Herefordshire teacher has won a prestigious Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship that will take her on a musical mission of discovery to three countries.

Luzili Mulundi-King of Yarpole, head of music at Lucton School, has selected as one of this year 103 Churchill Fellows from among 1200 applicants around the country.

Mrs King, who also teaches at St Richard's School, Bredenbury, won the choral music study award from among 75 entrants. She was "shocked but delighted" to be chosen.

Her eight-week fellowship will take her to Estonia, Kenya and Norway. She is concerned over the lack of gender balance in English youth choirs - boy singers are found only in very small numbers in mixed choirs.

Mrs King, who has two daughters, is keen to find out how other cultures succeed in keeping the girls and the boys singing.
