AN 82-YEAR-OLD man has been found dead following a fire at his rural Herefordshire home early yesterday morning.
The man, whose name has not been released, was discovered in his smoke-filled sitting room at Llangarron after a neighbour alerted the emergency services.
It is believed he died after a chair caught fire, up to two hours before his body was discovered at 9am.
Firefighters from Ross-on-Wye and Whitchurch attended the scene, described as a detached cottage in a remote location, for two hours. Early indications suggest the fire was accidental. Hereford Fire Brigade's community safety officer, Neil Pigott, said the death might have been avoided had the cottage been fitted with smoke alarms and has issued a fire safety warning.
