A CAUSE close to his heart has prompted a Llangrove man to run in the Tresco Marathon for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust on April 14.

Paul Bazen took up the challenge after the disease affected members of his family and he aims to raise funds for research to bring the society closer to finding a cure.

Now in its third year of operation, Mr Bazen - who is employed by Howdens Joinery - will be one of 100 runners taking part in the run set to take place on the same day as the London Marathon.

Cystic Fibrosis is the UK's most common life-threatening inherited disease with more than 7,000 children and adult sufferers.

It affects vital organs such as the lungs and pancreas by clogging them with thick, sticky mucus and at present, life expectancy is around 31.

The trust is now spending £45 million a year on medical research, clinical support, and family care and for the first time ever, the cure is within their grasp.

But more funds are needed to enable them to continue with their research.
