BOWLS -- Having just missed out on promotion to the first division of the Herefordshire County short mat Bowls league before the last game of the season was played against visiting Ross 'B' the Sellack club have, overall, had a very successful season. A third place final league position is the highest finish in its history, and good placings in local tournaments have seen the club grow in stature, helping to impress the game upon the younger fraternity. For Jean Moriss it was a first attempt at being club captain, and an excellent job she has done. Her encouragement to the younger members and harmonising them with the older players is to be much admired. Sellack's match against Ross was a closely fought game which eventually saw the final outcome going in the visitors' favour, with a 4-6 win for Ross 'B'. Two Sellack triples bowls teams entered this season's short mat Bromyard Leisure Centre Trophy competition. But, unluckily, the two sides were drawn to play in the same initial grouping and had to play against each other. Jean and John Moriss, with grandson, Josh Bundy, eventually lost out to their club rivals, all teenagers, Karen and Nigel Skyrme, and their cousin Gareth Barnfield who won the group and a place in the semi-final against Aston Ingham. The three teenagers from the Sellack club put together some fine play to beat the Aston Ingham stalwarts overwhelmingly, whilst in the other semi-final match, the Ross Larruperz triples side beat a team competing from the Lea club. The final was a repeat of the county triples final when the two same clubs pitted their skills against each other. On that occasion the Sellack club emerged victorious, but this time, after taking the lead, Sellack finally succumbed to the Larruperz team losing by just four shots 11--7. Playing for Larruperz was county captain Les Phillips, June Pearce and Hazel Vittalli. On Sunday, April 7, two Sellack youngsters, Nigel & David Skyrme, together with Woolhope's Harry Rhodes play at the national under-18s finals, this year held at Roade School, near Northampton after winning their way through the county stages earlier in the season. The following weekend a trip to the Kettering National Short mat bowls venue will see Sellack's mother and son Gladys and Ivor Skyrme competing in the triples with Madley colleague David Lane. Nigel Skyrme, for the second year in succession, also makes the journey after finishing runners-up to Fownhope's Fred Jolley in the senior singles section county nationals.
