MADAM, It has been recognised for some years that Sydonia Swimming Pool was coming to the end of its life and so a new pool for the area was a priority. Work has been going on to progress this including consultation with affected groups, but at the same time every effort has been made to keep the pool open until the new one was completed.

In February this year a series of problems prompted an urgent health and safety report. This was received on February 26 and recommended closure. A further report by Herefordshire Council's property services was commissioned and this recommended closure on March 5. A further health and safety report on March 6 again recommended closure and, as a matter of urgency, the decision to close on March 8 was taken.

The pressing need then for a new pool resulted in a meeting with Sport England on March 11 at which SE agreed to turn around the initial application in 16 weeks. A team is currently working on the bid which will hopefully get to SE in six weeks. Their decision will affect any future decision of this council, as funding for the new pool is dependent on the bid's success.

The important thing now is for everyone to work together for the provision of a new pool for Leominster and we hope people will rally around as we strive to build a new facility fit for the 21st century.
