MADAM, I would like to pay tribute to the fabulous people who staffed it, especially the creche helpers.

I have visited Sydonnia twice a week for the last nine years but I could only do so because of the superb women who have staffed the creche.

They have been unfailingly cheerful, coaxing reluctant little ones in, keeping them happy and busy, always interested in their progress when they go to school.

I have done ante-natal exercises there and been able to get straight back to swimming after each of my three children's births. This has been a vital ingredient in maintaining physical health.

The pool has also had a part to play in mental health: living in the countryside with very small children is isolating. The creche meant mothers with young children from Leominster and surrounding villages could meet others in similar circumstances. Many have become friends.

By introducing our babies to the water early, they are ready for formal swimming classes at just three. It is a skill that can save their lives.

It is my proud boast two of my kids have gone to school already swimming. I hope my third will be as lucky - saying we will have a replacement 'sometime' is no help. She only has one childhood.
