MADAM, I would like to support Bill Tanner's article/campaign against the theft of the 4x4s by adding our own experience.
Our Daihatsu Fourtrak TDX reg: L2 WAS was stolen around midday on Tuesday February 19, 2002 from a side road in Abergavenny (on market day!).
The vehicle had been maintained by Burgoyne of Eardisley and was in excellent condition for its year (1993). The police have not been able to trace or recover the vehicle.
We are inclined to agree that vehicles are stolen to order, either for re-use or for spares.
The only thing your article did not dwell on was the anxiety-trauma and financial loss caused to the owners of the vehicle.
The only good thing to come out of it all was the kindness of a resident who drove us 50 miles home over the mountains - we are both in our late 70s.
