THE only payphone at Leominster Bus Station is not under threat in a new wave of kiosk closures, BT said this week.
A Leominster phone box on a county 'hit list' has already been taken away the company revealed. Leominster councillor John Thomas protested when BT circulated a list of closures, which appeared to include the only public phone at the bus station.
BT Payphones spokesman Les King cleared up the confusion. He said the listing did not to refer to the remaining payphone at the site or another lone payphone nearby at the former bus station in Dishley Street.
The Leominster kiosk on the closures list had already been removed as part of a 'thinning out' operation said Mr King.
Last week BT defended plans to close 31 telephone boxes in Herefordshire. It said many were becoming uneconomic because of the boom in use of mobile phones.
