PARENTS from a Hereford school have demanded urgent action be taken by the Local Education Authority to alleviate the traffic chaos, which they believe could cause the death of a child.

Ever since Marlbrook School relocated to its new premises three years ago, parents have encountered serious parking problems outside the Redhill site with cars strewn across roads, blocking residents' garages and the school's entrance.

A petition containing over 200 signatures has been gathered by angry and concerned parents, who urgently seek a car park to stop the build up of cars outside the school gates in Green Croft and Honddu Close.

Angela Errington, a parent from the school, explained the need for a parking facility.

Car park call

"To have a car park would ease the traffic problems around the school gates, easing residents complaints, and allaying parents' fears for their children's safety. We, as parents are not prepared to sit back and wait until a child is seriously injured or killed!"

Headteacher Robert Gardner agreed that parking was necessary, but was clear that children's safety was his priority.

"We recognise the need for parking and we are hopeful temporary parking will be available as soon as possible. An Early Excellence Learning Centre will be built on school land and parking is clearly visible on the plans.

"I have spoken to the LEA to try to get the car park built before the buildings to help solve the problem. From my perspective it is paramount to keep the children safe."

George Salmon, the LEA's head of policy and resources, is hopeful a solution will be found in the next few weeks.

"We are exploring the possibility of opening southern access to the school to relieve the congestion in the area."

However, resident John Holder believes a common sense policy could easily prevent the traffic chaos.

"Although I support the petition and agree parking is needed, many parents are making the problem worse. Many could car share and around 80 per cent could walk instead of driving to reduce congestion.

"The problem is made worse by some parents who arrive an hour before the school closes to pick up their kids. Have they not got anything better to do with their lives?"
