COALITION AGAINST THE WAR -- The meeting room at Knighton's Offa's Dyke Centre was packed to overflowing for Knighton Coalition Against the War's showing of 'Not in Our Name', a video film in which Tariq Ali, Tony Benn, Paul Foot, John Pilger and other intellectual luminaries stated the case against war with Iraq. The film included examples from the recent wars in Kosovo and Afghanistan. After an interval in which refreshments were served there was an open discussion when members of the audience had the opportunity for an open and frank expression of their own views. Knighton Coalition Against the War is organising a coffee morning at Knighton Baptist Church this Saturday (February 8th) from 10am to 12noon. Admission is 50p, which includes a cup of coffee or tea and a biscuit. All proceeds will go towards the running costs of the coalition's campaign.

ST EDWARD'S CHURCH -- Last Sunday was the Festival of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple and Jim Muggleton led the service of Morning Prayer . In his sermon Mr Muggleton said that Simeon, the devout elderly man who recognised the infant Jesus as the Messiah when Mary and Joseph presented their son in the temple, had been moved by the Holy Spirit to be there at the right time and place. "People guided by the Holy Spirit are there at the right time and in the right place, just as Simeon was," said Mr Muggleton. Fay Exworth-Dent and the Rev. Donald Green read the lessons and Vera Wood led the intercessions. The festival of the Presentation is also called Candlemas and traditionally marks the end of Christmas period in the Christian calendar, and the start of the pre-Lent period which looks forward to Lent and the great Christian festival of Easter. At one time Christmas decorations - which were not put up until Christmas Eve - were left up until Candlemas.
