TWO Leominster nine-year-olds have struck a blow for girl power. Holly Tansley and Aisha Townsend have entered a hitherto all-male preserve by becoming Cub Scouts.
Holly, daughter of Scout leader Mark Tansley, made her bit of history as Leominster Scout Group, one of the oldest troops in the country, rounded off its 90th anniversary celebrations.
Next in was Aisha, daughter of vicar Mark Townsend. The Thursday night Starlings - one of two cub packs in Leominster - now consists of Holly, Aisha and 22 boys.
And look out lads - the revolution is only just beginning. Pack leader Jim Airey is getting inquiries from other girls.
Jim, father of two sons, admits the groundbreaking entry of females into part of a very traditional movement, presented a learning curve to all concerned, him included.
"The boys were a bit apprehensive at first, but the girls join in everything including the football and everyone has got used to the change," said Jim."They are all Cub Scouts."
Aisha's father Mark Townsend said: "She's loving it - the boys have made the girls feel welcome."
Jim Airey, whose wife Jane runs the Beaver Scouts group for 6-8 years olds, believes Scouting still offers an attractive option for youngsters. Activities still include proper camping under canvas, which is very popular.
Jim and Jane welcome inquiries from potential members and volunteer helpers. They can be contacted on 01568 614884.
