FROM 1970-77 Neville Alderton, who died on January 31 aged 72, shared his skills with students at the then Hereford Technical College. He taught baking and confectionery, a trade he was born into.

Mr Alderton and his brother Jerry left the family business at Abergavenny in the late 1950s to set up one of their own in Hereford - based near St Nicholas Church. He went on to run shops in the city and at Marden.

Teaching was a second talent. He took great pride in the achievements of students who, in turn, spoke highly of his ability to share skills and inspire.

Mr Alderton was something of a personality on the city's social scene too; a keen bowler who represented the county and counted a number of local licensees as friends. He combined both by running The Bowling Green, Bewell Street, for 10 years.

In the 1980s he moved out to The Gower and then on to Majorca where he fell back on his first trade and set up a bakery business.

Seven years later he was living in Denham, Buckinghamshire.

Mr Alderton is survived by two sons Adrian and Robin, his funeral takes place at Breakspeare Crematorium, Ruislip, at 1.30pm tomorrow.
