A LOWER speed limit could be slapped on the Mortimers Cross accident blackspot. But local proposals for a roundabout are likely to be ruled out by highways chiefs as 'too costly.'

Residents launched two petitions calling for urgent action to reduce hazards at the crossing where the speed limit is 60mph. The junction is the scene of frequent accidents.

Some of the residents and members of three parish councils - Kingsland, Aymestrey and Yarpole Group - pressed for action at a recent meeting with highways engineer Andrew Lee Jones.

David Delaney of Mortimers Cross Mill said some residents were disappointed that a roundabout solution was apparently considered a non-starter.

Kingsland Parish Council chairman Rodney Smallwood said his council thought a roundabout impractical for the location.

He said Kingsland was pressing for a lower speed limit and bigger and better warning signs at the danger spot. Rumble strips on the road surface should also be considered, said Mr Smallwood.

"It's a bad junction. Travelling north or south it doesn't look like a cross roads - it looks like an open road," he said.

A county highways spokeswoman said lead engineer Andrew Lee Jones was aware of residents' concerns about dangers at Mortimers Cross.

He was awaiting a formal request from parish councillors for speed limit reduction. Creation of a footway at the junction would also be considered.
