MADAM, I work in Garrick House and regularly cross the road to go into town.

When the pedestrian light is on green traffic is moving out of Widemarsh Street either into Blueschool Street or straight on into Widemarsh Street.

On Thursday, I had the green light to cross the road from JD's to the centre and a car drove straight at me, having turned right out of Widemarsh Street, missing me by inches only because I ran to get out of the way. A lorry driver waiting at the lights in Newmarket Street asked me if I was OK because it was so close.

This is a regular occurrence even though there is a no right turn sign on the traffic lights. I have even seen articulated lorries doing it. How long is it going to be before someone is seriously hurt, especially an older person who is slow?

When are the Highways Agency or the council going to do something to make it impossible for vehicles to do this?

I would like the police to monitor the situation and see exactly how many times this happens during a day - I think they will find it is very often.
