A £25,000 sports facility catering for tennis, football and basketball is set to be built in Tarrington.

The multi-purpose sports court will be built just outside the Lady Emily Community Hall.

The hall committee has now approached Herefordshire Council for planning permission.

The next stage is to apply for funding from the National Lottery to cover its installation.

Robert Hodges, a member of the committee, said he did not know how long it would take to get the money together, but he thought the project would take at least six months.

He added that space for games like football and basketball was lacking in Tarrington.

"There isn't anything in the village at all in the way of outdoor recreational facilities," he said, "The hall is the only place where the kids can kick a football."

The patch of land outside the hall where the new courts are to be built is already used for regular Sunday morning football.

Part of the grass will be retained, but the rest will be covered with tarmac for the new courts.

Jason Charlton, who organises the Sunday football and is a member of the hall committee, said the new facility woud be a real asset to the village and surrounding area.

"We've been talking about it and been in consultation with the community for more than a year, and we've finally decided where we would like it," he said.

He added that it would have to pay for its own maintenance, but the committee hopes to come up with a scheme to allow local youngsters to use it cheaply.
