GLOUCESTERSHIRE County Council has said it is not going to get as much money from the Government as it first thought.

Figures announced in December showed the council would get a 7.2 per cent rise in direct Government grant to £309.638 million in 2003/4.

But the council announced on Monday (February 3) that it would, in fact, be getting £409,000 less than that.

"We are already one of the lowest funded counties in the country, so this is a serious blow," said Liz Boait, deputy leader of the council.

The news could have an impact on the Council Tax.

"We will have to decide whether to recommend budget cuts or ask Gloucestershire's residents to shoulder even more of a financial burden," she said.
