AN epic 250-mile mountain bike ride across Cuba has just been completed by a Ledbury man.

Peter Webb raised £2,300 for the Douglas Bader Foundation through sponsorship during the trek, returning to his New Street home on Monday.

The 34-year-old said he had really enjoyed the experience, although it had been hard getting used to pedalling 50 miles a day in 90-degree heat.

"By the second or third day, I thought my knees were going to explode," he said, "But by the fifth day I had got through the pain barrier."

He said people had lined the streets to greet the group of 23 cyclists.

"They're very poor," he said. "The average wage is between $4 and $6 a month, and we were giving away a lot of our kit as we went - pens, paper and T-shirts.

"But they're very happy, they were so pleased to see us. The atmosphere was fantastic."

He said cycling had allowed the group to get to areas of the country that would have been impassable to a coach, and that he would definitely recommend it to anyone.
