The Rector of Newent, the Rev Robert Simpson, is busy writing to trusts and other organisations to find the extra £8,000 needed to pay for the restoration of St Mary's Church organ.
In the last three years, The Friends of St Mary's have put £10,000 into the fighting fund, having organised a number of fundraising events, including concerts and meals, to contribute to the appeal.
Rev Simpson said: "The Friends have worked very hard indeed."
Although not all the money needed has been found, Rev Simpson said the restoration work is scheduled to begin soon, following a concert at the church on February 22 given by local professional organist, Paul Derrett.
Before the concert, at 7.45pm, the Friends of St Mary's will give a short talk about their work and aims from 7.30pm.
Rev Simpson said: "That will be the last time people will be able to hear the organ played in its present form."
The instrument dates back to 1737 but the Victorians could not resist replacing some of its pipes.
The restoration aims to replace these with ones more in keeping with a Georgian instrument.
