BAZADAIS made a first appearance at Ross Store Cattle sale and landed the top price of £760.
The breed, popular in France, is somewhat rare in the Midlands but half a dozen of the breed were among a consignment of 41 from Messrs Baldwin of Whitehouse Farm, Clements End, Coleford, at last Thursday's sale.
The top price for the Continental breed was closely followed by a Belgian Blue steer at £745.
Roy Baldwin said he and his two sons, Peter and Daniel Baldwin, decided to restock with Belgian Blue after the foot-and-mouth outbreak and during the restocking process bought some Bazadais crossed with Belgian Blue in Northumberland.
"We are very pleased with them. They are similar to Belgian Blue and are breeding with 12 cows. We also have some young heifers.
"The butcher and the housewife like them because they carry such little fat."
So uncommon are the Bazadais in Britain that they are not even listed in the British Cattle Movement Guide.
