Madam, In the same week the National Lottery Fund found £20million or so to buy a picture, and the Government a few £billion to fund a war, we had a letter from the self same Lottery Fund.

The difference is that we wanted £1,500 to undertake a feasibility study into replacing the ageing wooden hut we use as a village hall.

Quite a work of art in its own right !

Unfortunately the West Midlands-based Lottery Committee on our case had ''received applications which more closely met its aims'' and turned us down.

While this probably meant that they had put the cash to urban rather than rural community activities, it makes you think doesn't it ?

Paintings or people? It's a funny old life.

Eric Loe,
