SADDAM Hussein is an insane dictator with a very bad track record and military action against him may be necessary, according to the Bishop of Hereford, writes PETE BLENCH.

The Rt Rev. John Oliver, a panel member on Carlton TV's 'It's Your Shout,' told an audience at Leominster's Lion Ballroom that the Iraq issue was a moral maze.

Saddam had made only small concessions over weapons following the UN resolution. They were not enough and military action may be necessary.

"I think we probably don't have any alternative," said the Bishop.

Two other panellists, Labour peer Baroness Angela Billingham and the Conservative MP for West Worcestershire Sir Michael Spicer, also supported the Government line on Iraq.

The Sunday audience, made up of invited participants from local groups and political parties, appeared divided.

Les Hardy, of Barons Cross, representing the Green Party, said he was totally opposed to war. "My concern is for the ordinary people of Iraq who will be killed by cluster bombs," he said.

Rupert Blum of Stoke Prior, a Conservative, said only military installations would be targeted.

Other comments from the audience included claims that President Bush was a "madman," that "Tony Blair is digging himself into a hole," and Saddam was the "playground bully who must be dealt with."

Leominster MP Bill Wiggin (Con) said the solution to the crisis rested with the Iraqi leader. He appealed for the country to 'get behind our servicemen'.

The panel and audience also debated other controversial topics - the asylum seekers issue was discussed on camera and GM foods during an unscreened 'warm up' session.
