Kenilworth 3 pts Luctonians 18

LUCTONIANS returned to winning ways following the previous week's defeat to maintain their promotion bid in Power-gen Midlands 1.

Due to injuries and unavailability Luctonians, fielded a somewhat changed side.

Luctonians kicked off into a stiffish breeze but immediately play was taken into their 22, but they eventually cleared their line.

For the first 15 minutes the home side had the better territorial possession and during that time should have taken lead, but a simple penalty chance was put wide.

The visitors gradually came more into the game and after 20 minutes they ran a penalty but were held up over the try-line. The Kenilworth number four was sin-binned and shortly after Luctonians took the lead when Andy Garrod came off the wing to score a try which Jeremy Wheadon converted.

Kenilworth hit back and came close to scoring, but an important scrum was taken against the head to relieve pressure.

Within minutes of returning to the field, Kenilworth's Paul White-house was sent off after a second yellow-card off-ence.

But Luctonians failed to press home their advantage, leaving the half-time score at 7-0 in their favour.

Wheadon then increased their lead with a penalty.

At times Kenilworth belied their lowly league position with some good play, but after 25 minutes the visitors made three substitutions and forced the visitors to frantically defend.

Lock-forward Darren Brick was yellow-carded after 32 minutes and from the resultant penalty Kenilworth reduced arrears.

Three minutes later the home side were attacking when centre replacement Tim Sedgewick intercepted a pass and, though eventually overhauled, he managed to pass to James Owen who sprinted over for an unconverted try.

Near the end Luctonians were again reduced to 14 men when replacement flanker Lee Woodhouse was yellow-carded for a late tackle.

But they had the final say when Wheadon kicked a late penalty to complete a double over the Warwickshire club.
