BOWLS -- Two indoor short mat bowls games, played within a few days of each other saw the Wanderers club consolidate their top position in division two. The first of those league games was away to one of this season's newest clubs to join the association, Bishopswood, and the club their use equipment that was purchased by the County Association for their use, and the club was helped set-up at the same time, 18 months ago. Enthusiastic bowling from the home players saw them win some of the initial ends on each playing surface. But as the Wanderers bowlers got to grips with the quite unusual 'go' of the carpets, the scoring became more and more frequent, with the more experienced visitors eventually winning all four games and the overall shots on the night as well as the two matches played this season. Having picked up 11 points from that match, the Wanderers were then at home, welcoming friends who play for the Madley club. Work to the lighting at the St Weonards hall in time for this match, through the much appreciated efforts of the chairman, Andrew Lewiss, brightened up the afternoon's game. The home team ran riot and won all four games emphatically, enabling a further 11 points to be added to the season's rapidly growing total. The match had its usual humorous nature, which was helped by the fact that there was a husband and wife duo playing, but not on the same side. Sheila Lane, had transferred to the Wanderers in late December from Madley and her husband, David, is still the Madley club treasurer/player. Both players had very good games for their respective teams but Madley, it appeared, had met the Wanderers on one of those exceptional days and left scratching their heads, wondering what had hit them.
