A BLOOD-curdling replay of the 15th century Battle of Mortimers Cross is to be staged near Leominster this summer, writes PETE BLENCH.

The Wars of the Roses clash, which resulted in local nobleman Edward Mortimer winning the crown of England, will be re-enacted as part of the Leominster Medieval Fair in June.

Members of the British Plate Armour Society first staged a re-enactment of the battle at the first medieval fair in 2001 and were applauded for their impressive show.

Last year, problems over siting led to cancellation of the fair. But organisers are jubilant that the event can be staged again this year. It will return to its original site on riverside meadows at Broadward Hall, Leominster, and will take place throughout the weekend of June 7 and 8.

Spokeswoman Joan Thwaites said the organisers were inviting local villages to get involved by mounting displays on their history, particularly at the time of the great battle in 1461. Stalls were available for village groups, she said.

"They can be used as an opportunity to raise money for a village project and attract tourists," said Joan.

"If possible we would like people to dress in authentic clothes and we will offer advice and help."
