TENNIS proved a smash for Hereford Cathedral Trust and Cancer Research last year, raising over £5,000.

Now the organisers want to do even better with a second event in June.

In the first Herefordshire Charity Tennis Tournament 48 players of mixed talents took part in a round robin among themselves to raise the money with Roger Davies and Laura Morris being the winners and David Rees and Sarie Green runners up.

The tournament was played on six courts throughout the county culminating in the final at The Whittern in Lyonshall.

This year the target is 100 players to form teams of four mixed pairs and the money is raised through an entrance fee.

The tournament is again being planned by Ian 'Gio' Hilditch and Erica Manley and the money will go to the Cathedral Perpetual Trust.

They emphasise that fun is the main element, rather than the competitive spirit with people playing with friends to raise money for a good cause.

The mixed doubles event will take place on Saturday, June 14 and anyone interested in entering a team should phone Ian Hilditch on 01544 340608 or Erica Manley on 01432 271990 for more details.
