Hereford United boss Graham Turner has bolstered his squad with the capture of former Chesterfield player Danny Williams and ex-Leicester City midfielder Robert Purdie.

The pair secured season-long, full-time deals at Edgar Street and bring the number of summer arrivals to eight.

Twenty-one-year-old midfielder Williams was released by Chesterfield at the end of last season after making 23 first-team appearances in total for the Derbyshire club.

Sheffield-born Williams has spent the pre-season programme with United and impressed in the opening two friendlies with Tranmere Rovers and Swindon Town.

And ex-Leicester Under-19 Purdie, who has also gained experience in Leicester's reserve team, turned out for United's reserves towards the end of last term.

The duo should feature in United's attractive friendly against Second Division Bristol City at Edgar Street this Saturday and Tuesday's trip to League of Wales outfit Aberystwyth Town.

Turner said: "The squad is beginning to take shape now and we have competition for places in some areas.

"We are still looking for an experienced midfielder and an experienced striker and we are in conversation with a number of players over coming to Hereford. It's no secret that some players have declined our offers, but we are not desperate to sign players and we want to make sure that we get the right ones."

Turner has decided not to offer terms to trialist Rod Giggs, the brother of Manchester United and Wales star Ryan Giggs.

He said that striker Scott Voice, who is spending the week at Lilleshall, faces the prospect of having a metal plate inserted into the pelvic region to solve a long-term injury.

The former Bilston Town marksman has been hampered by injury since he joined United last summer from the Dr Martens Western Division club.

Meanwhile, United are holding a fun-filled open day at their Edgar Street headquarters this Sunday between 11.30am and 2.30pm.

Parachutists will drop in to the ground with United's new strip to show to fans.
