DURING January, 15 lodges held meetings of the Herefordshire Freemasons. To begin the New Year, Palladian Lodge No 120, the senior craft lodge in the county, now in its 242nd year, held its installation meeting at which Phillip Burgess, the outgoing Master installed Graham Millichip as his successor. Tributes were also paid to the late Arthur Buckley who had served the lodge as its almoner ever since 1985. During the meeting £250 was raised for the Acorn Children's Hospice building appeal. Some days later many members of Palladian Lodge and other lodges throughout Herefordshire joined Arthur's family, members of Probus and the golf club for a well attended service of thanksgiving at St Paul's Church, Tupsley the collection there being shared between the Hereford Ambulance Service and the Masonic Housing Trust. Delphis Lodge's popular 'Old English Night' again attracted a full house and was host to Lodge Glittering Star, an Army lodge consecrated in 1759 in the Irish Constitution whose headquarters are in Dublin. One hundred and forty Masons, including the Provincial Masters of Herefordshire and Staffordshire and members of both the Irish and English Constitutions, some of whom had travelled hundreds of miles to be present, witnessed a very interesting demonstration of Irish ritual. After the ceremony all enjoyed a meal and evening of entertainment during which £470 was raised for charity. Because the emotive subjects of politics and religion are forbidden at our meetings, the gathering of members from both Constitutions was a pleasing reminder that Freemasonry provides a neutral meeting place where men of different political and religious persuasions can come together in harmony. The 13 other lodges not mentioned by name in this report all held collections for charity.
