BRUCE Rioch earned fame as a combative midfielder for Derby County and Scotland with a reputation for a fierce-some shot.

Judging by his son Greg's exploits for Northwich against Hereford United in midweek he has passed on his shooting genes.

Rioch junior was the player that broke Hereford captain Ian Wright's wrist and hand with a free kick in the last few minutes of the sides clash in midweek.

It proved a double blow for the Bulls who unfortunately lost the match 2-1 and also the services of Wright but the good news is that the defender could be back within a couple of weeks. "It's pretty sore and swollen but I would hope to be involved sooner rather than later," said Wright.

"It was a bit of a freak injury and the ball just caught me awkwardly as I blocked it."

The injury rules Wright out of Hereford's latest attempt to recapture some home form against Halifax Town today but the captain is confident that if his team-mates keep plugging away they will get results.

"We haven't had the results at home but we've actually been playing quite well," he added.

"We just need to keep going, do what we are doing, keep creating chances, and the law of averages says we will score some goals."

Striker John Grant is still a couple of weeks away from a return following his fractured fibula but Ben Smith's imminent comeback will be a massive boost to the squad.

Hereford will kick off their FA Cup campaign with a home clash against Bedfordshire minnows Arlesey Town next Saturday.

With £20,000 up for grabs it's a tie the cash-strapped club cannot afford to lose as manager Graham Turner acknowledges.

"We cannot afford any complacency but it gives us a great chance to progress," he said.

Andy Theodosiou who made 42 Football League appearances for the Bulls between August 1991 and December 1992 is a member of the Arlesey squad but is currently sidelined through injury.
