Castle Green is a dramatic space to the south-east of the city positioned high up on the north bank of the River Wye adjacent to Victoria Bridge.

Only five minutes away from Hereford's main retail area Castle Greens' landscape setting and sense of tranquillity contrast with the hustle and bustle of the streets surrounding High Town and provides the city's inhabitants and visitors with a wonderful location to relax and unwind.

Castle Green is sited on the historic castle circuit (demolished in the seventeenth century) and is characterised by its relationship to the River Wye, the Victoria Bridge (1898), its distinctive topography, the Nelson Monument, Castle Pool (part of the original Castle Moat) and by Castle Cliff (originally the 14th century Watergate).

It is considered to be an underused space that lacks appropriate levels of surveillance and lighting and that fails to optimise it relationship with the River Wye, the Cathedral and with Redcliffe Gardens.

The primary objective of the proposals is to make the City's inhabitants and visitors aware of Castle Green and its history and to ensure that people are able to find and enjoy what is an attractive space.

It is proposed that improvements be made to access along the river, to the buildings at Castle Cliff and to surfacing, furniture, lighting and to planting within and around the Green.

Castle Green has the potential to offer good views across the River Wye, to become an important part of the proposed crafts loop and to offer facilities that complement those offered by other parts of the city. Suggestions for new facilities include the creation of a caf / crafts facility on the Wye side of Castle Cliff, the promotion of musical / theatrical performances within the Greens' dished lawns and the replacement of existing toilet facilities with a new building. This new building could fulfil a craft-based role and could ensure that any replacement toilets are provided within a managed building.

The spaces of Castle Green and Redcliffe Gardens could become more accessible, feel safer and people encouraged to stay a little longer.
