DOGS, cats and other pets with troublesome teeth can now 'go to the dentist' at a new facility in Leominster.

The town's Ryelands Veterinary Clinic has opened a £10,000 dental suite at its Ryelands Road premises.

Said senior partner Andrew Praill: "Veterinary dentistry is an expanding part of our work. We are pleased to be able to respond to demand by creating a special room for treatment and investing in new equipment."

Dogs and cats are the most frequent clients, but growing awareness among pet owners is leading to an increase in the number of rabbits brought in for treatment to their teeth.

The vets also routinely do dental work on horses with special 'horse size' equipment including a huge power drill.

l During Pet Smile Month, May, local vets are urging pet owners to take their animals along for a free dental check up.

Louise Stirling Brown, head veterinary nurse at the Ryelands Clinic, said: "Severe dental disease with gum recession and inflammation is very common in dogs and cats, especially those over the age of four years.

"Early treatment is essential to avoid unnecessary discomfort to pets."

Local vets are giving free dental examinations, general advice and demonstrations of pet tooth brushing. Some surgeries are giving away free goody bags of tooth-friendly chewing treats for pets.
