Hereford United's veteran chief scout and director Ron Jukes has quit Edgar Street and linked up with Nationwide Conference rivals Telford United.

The 74-year-old's surprise move to join new manager Mick Jones at New Bucks Head emerged this week and follows hot on the heels of Matt Clarke's defection to the Shropshire club.

Jukes worked alongside United manager Graham Turner for just under eight years at Edgar Street and the pair were also together at Shrewsbury and Wolves.

But Jukes tendered his resignation and has now become a member of the board at Telford.

Turner said: "Ron was one of three directors at Hereford who on numerous occasions had gone unpaid if, at the end of the month, there was insufficient funds.

"He felt that he could no longer go on without a guaranteed income. Ron also felt that the journey from his home in Walsall was becoming too much."

George Hyde, another United director, has resigned from the board following his election to Herefordshire Council.

He felt that to serve as a councillor and a director would bring a conflict of interests.

Turner said he was disappointed in the manner in which Clarke conducted himself over the switch to Telford.

He said: "Matt agreed a new one-year deal with us on the Monday after the season ended with a couple of minor adjustments.

"There was a reduction in his wages but he accepted it without discussion. He shook hands on the deal and was due to sign the contract on the Wednesday after a fitness session - but he disappeared. On the Friday, he came to the club and told us he had decided to sign for Burton!"

Turner and coach Richard O'Kelly intend to scout for United in the short-term as they attempt to strengthen the squad by landing, at least, a couple of strikers, an experienced midfielder, a right-back and a goalkeeper.

Rob Purdie is the latest Hereford player to finalise a new one-year deal, with Danny Williams and Richard Teesdale still to re-sign.

Meanwhile, Hereford have three representatives in the UniBond Four Nations Tournament, which starts in South Wales this Tuesday.

Tony James and Paul Parry have now been officially named in the Wales Semi-Pro squad, with left-back Michael Rose called up for the England squad.

Former Hereford physiotherapist Simon Shakeshaft's charity match at Shrewsbury last Sunday raised £18,000 for the FA-backed 'Keep Your Eye On The Ball' campaign, which highlights awareness of testicular cancer.
