YOUNG vandals caused more than £1,000-worth of damage to a Hereford primary school when they pelted the building with hundreds of stones.

Thirty-three windows were smashed in the attack on Hunderton Infants School, which happened sometime during Sunday evening. The school caretaker discovered the devastation at 7am on Monday morning.

"It was an absolute mess, there was glass everywhere," said head teacher Margaret Davies.

"It was only thanks to the caretaker and the willingness of cleaners to come in early that we were able to open at all on Monday."

The vandals, believed to be former Hunderton school pupils, carried out their assault from the Great Western Way.

"We were forced to pollard a tree on that side of the school grounds, so we are a bit exposed, but this is so unnecessary."

The school is no stranger to vandalism. It was attacked in similar circumstances two years ago.

"It's just so mindless, there's no reason for it other than sheer stupidity."

The school has already replaced the windows, at a cost in excess of £1,000. The money will be found from funds meant for school improvements.

"It's very demoralising, but the staff have been wonderful. Everyone was so shocked when they arrived at work on Monday, but they've rallied round."

Mrs Davies is now pleading with the vandals for the attacks to stop.

"They don't think of the danger they are causing to the children, there was shattered glass everywhere."

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information should contact PC Sarah Sentinella at Hereford Police Station on 08457 444888.
