THE Mayor of Hereford will be the unlikely pace- setter in this year's half marathon and fun run.

Councillor Alan Williams will get the race underway by running the first 1.5 miles of the track around the race course on Sunday, May 18.

The charity run, organised by St Michael's Hospice, begins at 9.30am when a highland piper and Dolloway dancers will get the runners in the mood for the challenge ahead.

Councillor Williams, who has raised £25,000 for the hospice in his year as mayor, will be joined by former Westfields' footballer Kevin Hanna on the opening lap. Although Kevin, who had a brain tumour removed over two years ago, does not feel the time is right to complete the entire course, he is determined to give Alan a run for his money on the opening lap.

"Because of the surgery, it is probably not a good idea to try and run the full distance. Hopefully next year, I will be in a better position to finish the whole race," he said.
