Hereford based Judo player Stan Cantrill continued his preparation for the forthcoming World Masters Championships by taking double gold in the recent Multi-Nations Veterans Championships.
Fighting in the under- 81kg category, Cantrill secured a couple of good wins and progressed to the semi-finals where he faced a top Belgian fighter.
Cantrill threw his opponent for 10 points (the equivalent of a KO in boxing) to secure his place in the final.
Another 10-point throw, against a 5th Dan black belt, secured victory and the gold medal.
Cantrill then went on to compete in the open category.
Following a couple of tough fights he again progressed to the final. Despite conceding 1 stone in weight, Cantrill used his speed and superior fitness to wear down his opponent, securing victory inside the distance to earn his second gold of the day.
Cantrill, a four-times World silver medallist and the 2001 Herefordshire Sports Council Sportsman of the Year, is competing at the World Masters Judo Championships in Tokyo in June, where he is looking to finally capture the title.
