BOWLS -- Sellack Wanderers short mat bowls club ended their winter season in a flurry of activity, playing three friendly matches as well as completing the internal pairs league. Two sessions of excellent bowling from the club members saw John Moriss and Nigel Skyrme clinch the title over a 15-match competition, run at regular intervals throughout the season. A late run of favourable results from Bernard Pudge and Gareth Barnfield saw them deservedly gain second position. The three friendly matches were against Bromyard (away) and two games with Bulmers, both at St Weonards, as the cider men are at present without a indoor bowling facility.

The Wanderers lost all three matches, but the fun atmosphere, excellent refreshments and chance to rotate players to different positions proved successful in many ways and the social events are always keenly awaited. The daughter of the late James Campbell, Valerie, and her family attended a committee meeting and practice session to sanction the setting up of a memorial shield in the name of her father. Mr Campbell was chairman of the Sellack Bowls Club when he passed away, suddenly at his home, just over 12 months ago. Mr Campbell's family all agreed to a suggestion from the bowls club to commemorate the much-liked character by way of an inscribed shield, and this to be presented annually to the winners of the club's internal pairs league. The Herefordshire Short Mat Bowls Association held its presentation evening at Bishopswood village hall, where in the region of 100 people attended. It was an excellent evening, where competition winners throughout the season received their trophies. So, too, did the Sellack Wanderers members, who, with their league players, managed to come second in division two after Tarrington's amazing run-in pipped them by shot difference for first place, both clubs accumulating 134 points. Both clubs will be looking forward to life in the First Division next season.
