GARDENING CLUB -- Lingen Gardening Club last met on Tuesday, May 6, when Martin Ford gave a wide-ranging talk on 'Aspects of Pruning'. Martin has spent much of his working life in horticultural education, and was able to communicate valuable information from his knowledge and expertise to a full house in Lingen Village Hall. Martin appeared to have brought along half the contents of his garden to demonstrate the rights and wrongs of pruning, although, as he pointed out, there is no 'perfect' way to prune - much depends on the individual plant and gardener. He advocated taking out spent spring flowering shoots right after flowering, and leaving the late summer flowering shrubs until the following winter or spring. He is also a firm believer in being 'tough to be kind', emphasising that weaker shoots need more stringent attention than the stronger. At the end of his talk Martin gave very helpful suggestions and solutions to individual queries from the attentive audience. The next meeting of the club will be a visit to the Lingen Alpine Nursery of Kim and Maggie Davies on Tuesday, June 3. Telephone 01544 267828 or 01544 267586 for information.
