HEREFORDSHIRE people who helped to secure the future of one of the county's most historic sites flocked to see it on Sunday.
The normally quiet lane approaching Credenhill Park Wood and Hillfort experienced a rare traffic jam when the Woodland Trust, the new owners, staged an open day.
Hundreds of people walked the ramparts of the fort, a tribal capital in the iron age.
Many of the visitors were contributors to a £70,000 public appeal run by the Woodland Trust and The Hereford Times. The sum was the last lap in fundraising for a £700,000 purchase and restoration project. Conifer planting in the sixties marred the site.
Trust spokesman Laura Judson said : " People wanted assurances on how we plan to proceed and wanted to know how they can get involved."
The trust has promised a softly, softly approach on piecemeal removal of conifers. Work will not begin for some time.
