Westfields 4 Ettingshall 1
WESTFIELDS completed a magnificent season when they clinched the West Midlands League Premier Division title - and promotion to the Midland Alliance - in front of enthusiastic supporters in their last-ever game at Rotherwas.
After the game the West Midlands League secretary Neil Juggins presented the magnificent 110-year-old trophy to skipper Matt Phillips.
Needing a point to secure the championship, Westfields got off to a flying start with leading goal scorer Paul Burton being thwarted by a post in the sixth minute but soon making amends by clipping home a cross from Matt Beale.
A strangely hesitant Westfields failed to extend their lead before the break but, prompted by the industrious James Watkins in midfield, they continued to control play and Beale gave them a two-goal cushion when he broke down the right and cut inside to finish with a superb strike.
This settled Westfields and skipper Phillips broke down the left flank to send over an inch-perfect cross for Burton to head home at the near post.
Ettingshall pulled a goal back in the 78th minute but Watkins provided a cross for fellow midfielder Scott Jackson to head home and complete the scoring.
Kington Town 2 Westfields 1
Previously Westfields' title bid was put on hold when fast-finishing county rivals Kington completed a league double over their visitors in the penultimate game of the season.
Home goalkeeper Carl Rose made a brilliant double save in the first minute to deny Burton but the Westfields striker headed home a fourth-minute corner to open the scoring.
Alex Hunt equalised with a thundering drive after 17 minutes and Chris Aspey claimed the decisive goal on the half-hour when visiting goalkeeper Jon Pugh failed to collect a through ball.
Westfields were reduced to nine players when former Kington midfielder Scott Jackson was sent off after a foul on Ben Chambers and then Alex Winstone was also dismissed for an over-zealous tackle.
Kington held out for a notable double over their local rivals.
