A new rock band based at the John Masefield High School is celebrating winning a £50 cheque - plus respect -- in a fundraising talent concert at the school.
The event attracted 25 entrants and £2,000 was raised, to be split between the Rotary Club's Polio Eradication Fund and new instruments for the school, which has Arts College status.
The winners were the sixth formers Karl Lister (bass), Steve Kyle (guitarist and vocals), Edward Jago (drums) and Benjamin Gardner (guitar).
Collectively the four like to be known as Red Star Monkey and their winning number on the day was the smooth ballad classic, Baker Street.
The band's success is all the more remarkable because its members have only been playing together for less than three months.
