Promising young Herefordshire county player Andy Lambert (Burghill Valley) gave the twin-counties' selectors something to think about when he fired an excellent 137 (68, 69) for second place, two shots behind the winner Nigel Chesters (Hawkstone Park).

n Guests from 33 clubs joined Kington members for their annual Invitation Trophy.

Four pairs posted 41 stableford points in gusty conditions in the better-ball stableford, with Mike Corfield and his nephew Kevin (Coxmore Woods) taking the honours on a card countback.

n Andy Smart, Martin Hughes and 12-year-old Mark Keddie were the respective winners of their divisions in Hereford Municipal's Public Courses qualifying event and will represent the club in the regional competition at Thornbury, Bristol.

Phil Green and Duncan Smith, who did well in the final at St Andrews last year, had mixed fortunes. Green finished second in division one and is hopeful of a place in the regional final, but Smith trailed in sixth place in his division and missed out.

n Experience held off the challenge of youth at Herefordshire GC as Geoff Price and Keith Williams pipped junior captain Ross Adams and his junior colleague Richard Wellings to win the Lane Cup.

They posted 77-9-67 in the foursomes medal competition, with the youngsters on 80-12-68. Tony Dalley and Ken Mallender finished third with 80-9-70.

n Charles Houlbrooke fired an impressive 83-16-67 to win the Gordon Blake Cup at Ross-on-Wye and also qualify for the Gloucestershire County medal.

Gwynne Morgan also qualified with an excellent gross 77, the best round of the day.

Ross seniors captain Tom Moore is delighted with the form of his team after they extended their unbeaten run to six matches with a 5-2 away win over Herefordshire GC and a crushing 5- home win over visiting Broadway.

The ladies' A team maintained their winning run in the Gloucestershire Alliance League when they beat their club B team 12-6, and the C team shared the spoils with a 9-9 half at home to Lydney.

In-form Jenny Eckersley won the May stableford with 31 points, beating Julie Rollings on a card countback.
