HAYWOOD High School students will mix scientific knowledge with sporting agility when they compete in a remote control car race at Silverstone in June.

The Year 9 and 10 pupils are all part of the school's engineering club that have been working on the cars since September.

The cars, which have been built from scratch, have been finished in time for a national competition at Britain's most famous circuit on June 27.

With a top speed of 60 mph, a steady hand and nerves of steel are needed to control the car, but the teacher Albert Pitcher admits there is no shortage of drivers.

"Obviously everyone wants to be the one to control the car, but there will be a practice session on the day to see who is the most capable," he said.

"But even if they don't get to drive the car, they will all have learnt a lot from the experience," he added.
