THE Kilvert Society held their AGM in Hereford recently. Around 70 members of the 54-year-old society travelled from various parts of the country to be present. The business meeting took place in the Great Hall at the Bishop's Palace and was followed by supper and a talk by Lawrence LeQuesne, when he compared the diary of Francis Kilvert to that of Parson Woodford. New officers were elected, namely Michael Sharp, chairman, Colin Dixon, archivist and David Elvin, secretary. Retiring chairman, Ann Dean, was presented with a bouquet of flowers and book tokens. Howard Dean was presented with book tokens in recognition of his loyal support to his wife during her year of office. The weekend celebrations continued the following day at the Swan Hotel, Hay on Wye. Jeff Marshall, editor of the society's magazine, 'The Journal', showed a selection of slides, with appropriate readings from the Diaries. The slides were bequeathed to the society by Kenneth Clew. During the evening, a dinner was enjoyed by members, with more selections from the Diaries, read by Mr Sharp and everyone was invited to the Sunday morning service at St Mary's, Hay on Wye. Founded in 1948, the Society endeavours to maintain an interest in Francis Kilvert, his diaries and the countryside he loved.
