THE month commenced with two successful ladies' evenings - Albert and Eileen Attwood entertained a happy gathering of Royal Edward Lodge members and friends at the Talbot Hotel, Leominster whilst Ray Taylor, Master of Vaga Lodge, and his wife made the decision to change venues for their ladies' evening to the Left Bank Restaurant in Hereford. The choice was a good one and the evening lost none of its usual enjoyment for the many members and friends who supported them. The Provincial Charity Trust continued its support for community projects when its President, Rodney Smallwood, presented £1,000 to the Cheltenham hospital based Brachytherapy Unit to further its pioneer work for a new treatment of prostate cancer. This took place during the annual meeting of the Provincial Lodge for Gloucestershire, held in Pittville School Cheltenham. Brian Chaplin, trustee, thanked Mr Smallwood for the Masons' support and gave details of the progress being made. Back in Leominster, Albert Attwood installed Robert Pritchard as the Master of Royal Edward Lodge for the next 12 months, whilst in Hereford Les Hart presided over the installation of his successor in Dean Leigh Masters' Lodge, Derek Foster, the well known photographer. Dean Leigh is a Past Masters' Lodge and Derek, who is its 90th Master invested 'Chas' Watkins and Don Moore as Senior and Junior Wardens respectively and Arthur Mitchell as Chaplain. The welcome news has been received from London that one of our oldest charities, the Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys has been granted the honour of the prefix 'Royal' in recognition of its work with the education of young people and support for those who are handicapped or terminally ill.
