ST EDWARD'S CHURCH -- Father Andrew Pearce presided at Eucharist last Sunday at St Edward's Church. Hilary Howcroft and Diana Rudge read the lessons. Mrs Howcroft directed St Edward's Choir, and Cecil Rudge was organist. The musical setting for the Eucharist was 'The New People's Mass' by Dom Gregory Murray. Father Andrew led the prayers, and Peter Waters and Kevin Kell assisted in the distribution of the Communion.

CONCERT -- The Carroll College Choir with Jeffrey Douma their conductor gave a concert last Sunday night at Saint Edward's Church. The choir, which is from Wisconsin in the United States of America, effortlessly performed a wide range of choral music from the 16th century to the present including works by Peter Phillips (c1561-1628), Thomas Tallis (c1505-1585), William Byrd (1543-1623), William Albright (1944 - 1998), Herbert Howells (1892-1983) together with works by several American composers, and arrangements of hymns, folk songs and spirituals. The choir filled the church with sound, and at the same time demonstrated precise modulation and depth of tone in all four voices. Your reviewer was particularly moved by the beautiful simplicity of 'Love is Little' a traditional Shaker song arranged by Kevin Siegfried, and by the excerpts from the Chichester Mass by Herbert Howells. During the Sanctus the sound spiralled up into the great vaulted roof of the church, and then came the complete contrast of the sombre and thoughtful Agnus Dei. Knighton's Deputy Mayor and Town Crier welcomed the choir to Knighton, Father Andrew Pearce, Vicar of East Radnor, welcomed them to Saint Edward's Church. "We are pleased to be in a such a beautiful town and in a beautiful church," said Dr Douma in reply. The Carroll College Choir is currently on tour in Great Britain, with performances in Scotland and England, and just one in Wales - in Knighton.
