A PROJECT designed to increase youngsters' safety awareness is celebrating its 10-year anniversary by inviting 1,100 children to take part in its summer scheme.

The Crucial Crew take 10 and 11-year-old children through a half-day course to teach them the benefits of personal safety, good citizenship, crime prevention and the workings of the emergency services.

The group, which is run by the Herefordshire Crime Prevention Panel, will be running two courses from May 19 to May 23 and from June 2 to June 6 at the Territorial Army Centre, in Harold Street, Hereford.

This year the group will get help from the Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade, West Mercia Police, the Holme Lacy Agricultural College, the Herefordshire Youth Consortium and the Drug Action Team.

The groups will make separate presentations on a diverse range of topics such as drugs, cycle and road safety, internet security, air weapons, water safety, first aid and hazards in the home.
