A GIANT phoenix is set to take centre stage at Ross-on-Wye's theatre.
Designed by student Robin Brown, the striking steel sculpture was commissioned by the Phoenix Theatre Company as a public work of art to mark the opening of the new extension.
"We wanted something special to mark the completion of our extension and from the photographs we have seen, this could well be it," said Val Allen, Phoenix Theatre Company chairman.
The theatre is currently awaiting planning permission to allow the sculpture to be erected on a plinth in the courtyard.
"If it can't go there, we'll make sure it goes somewhere," added Mrs Allen.
The phoenix sculpture challenge was presented to students on the HND course in 3D design and blacksmithing, run jointly by Herefordshire College of Art & Design and Holme Lacy College, as an open commission.
"I just decided to go for it and am pretty pleased with the results," said Robin, who is hoping this will be the first of many commissions.
