Newent Town Council has asked Gloucestershire County Council to consider installing a signal controlled crossing in Broad Street.
The new facility would replace the zebra crossing by the library.
Because of safety concerns, town councillor David Blick has also called for the crossing to be moved to the widest part of the road, between Newent Library and the bus stop, where many people choose to cross at present.
Coun Roger Beard called for motorists to be made more aware of the crossing through methods such as road humps.
The county council has responded by pointing out that a recent safety audit on the road did not identify any issues.
It is also feared that the installation of a pedestrian controlled crossing in Broad Street would cause unnecessary delays.
The county council has asked the town to help it monitor the use of the existing zebra crossing for the time being.
