Ledbury Rugby Club return to action tomorrow (Saturday) with a home Midlands Three West (South) fixture against Leamington.

Last weekend's league fixture at Old Coventrians had to be postponed due to the Ledbury side being hit by the flu and unavailabilities. The match is due to be re-scheduled within the next few weeks.

Tomorrow's match is to be preceded by a vice-president's lunch to be attended by last year's RFU president Derek Morgan, a former England international, Barbarian and Lions selector. The guest speaker will be the Colwall rector Carl Attwood.

The match is due to start at 2.30pm.

LEDBURY 4ths 29pts,

LONDON CIVIL SERVICE VETERANS (FEZ) 33pts

THIS memorable fixture, which started back over 15 years ago, provided home spectators with a rare treat of a game.

The highlight of the day was that four youngsters made their playing debut for Ledbury seniors, and moreover, there were three proud fathers all playing in the same team as their respective sons, Rob Chapman, Dave Fletcher and John Wilesmith, indeed, the front row was exclusively Chapman.

Atrocious weather conditions in the morning evaporated in afternoon watery winter sun, and Ledbury playing down the slope began very well, with Ledbury's Pete Butler and Ally Smith causing havoc to the visitors' defence with their mazy running.

Within a quarter of an hour these two individuals had racked up three tries between them. Denver Rollings was making loads of ground with his bullocking runs from the base of the scrum, but once the visitors had overcome the car journey, they quietly began eating into Ledbury's lead.

Fez scrum half Rob Kerr was at his best, giving fly half Martin Wallace all the time in the world, and with Rod Spittal and Steve Nunn on their best form life for Ledbury became increasingly difficult. By half time, the visitors had drawn level at 19-19.

Ledbury began the second half badly, leaking two tries almost immediately. The youngsters in the side however displayed maturity beyond their years in taking the game to Fez whenever they had the ball in hand. Will Sergeant and Jack Wilesmith linked up to put Adam West over in the corner for a well worked try, and during the dying minutes Ledbury launched a superb attack ending in a penalty, quick ball was made available, and Chris Chapman found himself hurtling towards the line, only to be dragged down and into the posts, however brother Clive was on hand to take the pop pass and collapse over the line to score.

Youngest brother linesman Ollie Chapman was not so charitable, ruling that the ball did not clear the cross bar!
