Police and traders have launched a new radio scheme designed to stop shoplifters in Ledbury.

A one-month trial of the Ledbury Radio Link kicked off in the town this week, with between 15 and 20 shops taking part. If successful, it could be expanded over a longer period of time.

The initiative will see open radio links between shops, which would be monitored by staff at Ledbury Police Station. An incident, such as shoplifting in one shop, could instantly be broadcast to other shops in the town, so they can be on their guard.

Similar schemes have been running successfully in Hereford and Ross-on-Wye for some time.

Police Inspector Sue Thomas said: "The scheme is to unite local traders and the police in a bid to crackdown on retail crime and anti-social behaviour in Ledbury town."

She said it would make shops more aware of shoplifters and persistent offenders and help prevent theft from vehicles and cheque and credit card fraud.

"We hope that not only will we catch thieves but also deter them," said Insp Thomas.

"Overall, it will make Ledbury a safer town for the locals and visitors."

The one-month trial is free, but if it proves successful participating shops will pay a subscription to fund the service.

Insp Thomas said there would be no limit to the number of businesses taking part and that the aim was to get as much coverage as possible in the town.

A radio mast was installed in town on Wednesday to operate the system, which is being run by Mercia Radios.
