POLICE and the Ledbury community are mourning the loss of a well-loved police officer.

Former Ledbury sergeant Bob Wilson passed away on Friday after a battle with cancer. He had been off work since July because of the effects of the disease. He leaves a wife and two daughters.

Promoted to inspector after a move to Hereford some 18 months ago, Insp Wilson was last month awarded a divisional commendation for his commitment and dedication to the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team. During his seven years on the team he went on 70 call-outs, including searching for missing people in the Ledbury and Malvern areas.

Chief Superintendent Guy Rutter, Herefordshire divisional commander, said Inspector Wilson was a police officer with boundless enthusiasm who wanted nothing more than to help others.

"He was a good friend and a true professional throughout his long service in Herefordshire and spent several years serving the people of Ledbury as a sergeant.

"Bob gave his all to everything he did. His life was spent saving lives and he was always there to support others. He was a true gentleman and a tremendously popular member of our division.

"We are all saddened and feeling his loss. He has left a hole that will never be filled."

Former Ledbury mayor Spencer Lane, a close friend of Insp Wilson, said his passing was a tragic loss.

"Bob epitomised community policing," he said. "He was a stalwart of the Duke of Edinburgh Award in Ledbury, with his knowledge of mountain rescue, first aid and survival skills.

"Bob was the friendly face of policing, with a warm sense of humour, he was always approachable by everyone. He will be sorely missed."

Insp Wilson's funeral will be at Hereford Cathedral on Thursday, December 18, where he will receive full police honours.
